Mission

To accomplish its mission and main objectives, the Commission cooperates with UNESCO and other internation organisations. The Commission works through Working Groups established for each individual project, usually in the context of the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (IHP). Members of the Working Groups are selected according to their expertise in the given study topic and to the UNESCO territorial representation requirements.

Membership

The Commission on Ground-Water Protection of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) was established in Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia in 1979. The Commission meets annually to conduct its business, generally during IAH congresses or other meetings. The Commission membership is voluntary and open to all IAH members. Besides regular members, who are members of IAH, the Commission has corresponding members, who are either former Commission members or non-members of IAH who want to participate in its activities.

Currently, the Commission has the following 12 members and 3 corresponding members:

In Memoriam

In 2007 the Commission endured a great loss-untimely deaths of two devoted, longtime members, Hubert van Waegeningh of the Netherlands and Edmund Gosk of Denmark.

Hubert was one of the charter members of the Commission since 1979. He attended 10 meetings and participated on the Commission in three working groups. And even after his retirement from active membership, he always was willing to provide valuable, helpful advice and suggestions on new projects. Edmund joined the Commisssion in 1991. He attended six meetings and participated in three working groups.

Hubert and Edmund will be sorely missed.

History

The establishment of the IAH Commission on Ground-Water Protection resulted from discussions on ground-water protection problems during two symposia held in 1978: "Groundwater Pollution by Oil Hydrocarbons", Prague, Czechoslovakia, 5-9 June, 1978 and "Drinking-Water Protection Areas", Basel, Switzerland, 8-9 September, 1978.

Resolutions of these symposia called for the establishment of temporary working groups on impacts of agricultural activities on ground-water quality and quantity (proposed officers: J. Vrba, Chairman and E. Romijn, Secretary) and on drinking-water protection zones in humid climates (proposed officers: A. Kleczkowski, Chairman and R. Blau, Secretary). Proposals to form the working groups were submitted to the IAH Executive Committee, who approved the new working groups. In September 1979, the two working groups were incorporated into Commission on Ground-Water Protection, the constitution of which was formally proclaimed by the IAH President at the constituting session of the Commission in Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia, in September 1979. J. Vrba was appointed Chairman, and R. Blau Secretary of the Commission.

Since then, more than 40 IAH members participated in various Commission activities, particularly in six working groups. The longest continuing members of the Commission are: J. Vrba and H.G. van Waegeningh (since 1979), R. Aldwell (since 1980), S. Kaden (since 1984), and A. Zaporozec (since 1986). Other long-term members of the Commission include: E. Romijn (1979-2004), J. Hahn (1980-1994), L.J. Andersen (1980-1993), and L. Alföldi (1980-1992).
